    Amazon摘录,请大家耐心读完!

Review on《car suspension at work》[Handling and Roadholding(1st)]  Jeffrey Daniels
    ================================================================
Really good books on suspension are as rare as hens teeth. In fact, suspension and handling books normally fall into one of two categories: DIY guides to changing swings and sway bars (and stiffer is always better!) or mathematical treatises which are probably very interesting.... but understandable only to those with a degree in automotive engineering!!
Car Suspension at Work will certainly not tell you what spring rates to use at the back of your car, but it will give you the background to decide for yourself what might be an appropriate way to go. In other words, its no DIY manual, but a very comprehensive guide to the basics of suspension. And even if you reckon that youre a bit of an expert when it comes to the subject, youre certain to learn at least one or two very important points, as well as brushing up on all that knowledge you already have!
The book is a revision of Handling and Roadholding, first published in 1988. This second edition follows much of the same path - obviously, the fundamentals dont change - but has been revised and expanded. Unfortunately, that appears to mean that only the first and last chapters have been updated; there are some glaringly dated passages in the rest of the book! However, that doesnt reduce its overall worth.
In one of the early chapters, the British author explores the history of different suspension systems and spring types. This answers questions such as Why is independent suspension better than solid axle suspension?" and "What advantages do coil springs have over leaf springs?". While initially these questions might seem to be irrelevant to todays suspension systems, if you know why unsprung weight should be kept as low as possible, and the problems that result from the poor location of the driving axle, many other factors then also become clearer.
Another chapter explores the terms used to describe suspension and suspension behaviour. And there are certainly a lot of them: front and rear roll centres, understeer, oversteer, contact patch, pitch, roll, and so on. The meaning and importance of each of these is explained clearly and simply. While there is some mathematics used, the maths is a prop rather than a hindrance to understanding.
Fundamental Choices is a chapter devoted to different designs of suspension. Did you know that its possible to have a car automatically bank into a corner, like a motorcycle? And it can be done with a double wishbone suspension, too - pity the top mounts of the wishbones have to be half way through the tyres! Good diagrams and unambiguous explanations back up the discussion of wishbones, MacPherson struts, anti-dive and anti-squat, and different rear suspension designs. There are plenty of manufacturers drawings and photos to show the multitude of different suspension designs, too.
To me, the book is worth buying simply for the short chapter on tyres. It dispels many myths, challenges other assumptions, and is beautifully easy to follow. Unfortunately, the example tyres used are too old, meaning that the data on slip angles versus load is for tyres that nowadays youd only fit to a trailer... The author at one stage also contradicts himself, and better photos are needed. So why my praise? Simply because how a tyre works is so complex that any author who can help pull away that mist should be congratulated! In a similar manner, the following chapter on steering is also excellent.
Following yet another excellent chapter on handling, the book covers in three discrete chapters front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and four wheel drive cars. In each case, the contents are interesting and the explanations clear.
If you wonder how scrub radius affects stability, why fitting wider tyres doesnt change the contact patch area, how four wheel drive cars still only have the same ultimate cornering power as two wheel drive cars - if these questions interest you, youll love this book!
